About The Foundation
The Southfield Community Foundation was established in 1989 to provide an opportunity for individuals, corporations, and foundations to invest in the future of their community. The Foundation is recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable tax exempt organization by the IRS and as a certified Community Foundation by the State of Michigan. It is governed by a BOARD OF TRUSTEES drawn from those who work, live, or have a compelling interest in the quality of life in Southfield and Lathrup Village.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Foundation is to enhance the lives of those who live and work in Southfield or Lathrup
Village, Michigan.
We achieve that mission by focusing on four areas of service:
Service
to Donors
Grants to the Community
Community Building Activities
The Promotion of Philanthropy
Grants given back to the community
are made possible through the investment income earned
by the Foundation's Permanent Funds. Gifts to any of the
Foundation's permanent funds qualify for the Michigan
State Tax Credit.
To insure that the Foundation's grants and programs meet
the changing needs of the community, the Foundation is
governed by a board of directors made up of corporate,
community and civic leaders. Additionally, community volunteers
serve on several standing committees which advise the
board on specific issues.
The Foundation's offices are located in the historic Mary
Thompson Farm House located at 25630 Evergreen Road in
Southfield, Michigan. The Mary Thompson Farm was donated
to the City of Southfield as a recreational park for the
city's many senior citizens. Today, the Farm is home to
over 100 senior citizen garden plots and produces an amazing
variety of flowers, fruits and vegetables each summer.
Over the years the senior gardeners have developed a strong
culture of philanthropy and much of the produce is donated
to soup kitchens to feed those in need.
Mary also left the city an endowment to help maintain
the Farm, an endowment subsequently transferred to the
Southfield Community Foundation's Historic Preservation
Fund.
The Southfield Community Foundation
is a member of the Council
On Foundations and the Michigan
Council of Foundations.
